standoff. joe biden versus harry reid. democrat versus democrat. "outfront" tonight, north korea says it can hit american bases in japan and guam right now with its missiles. would kim jon-un do it? let's go "outfront." good evening, everyone. i'm erin burnett. "outfront" tonight we have breaking news with major developments in the search for the gunman who killed colorado's prison chief. at this hour investigators from colorado are headed to wise county, texas. it's about 45 miles from ft. worth. they're going there to see whether a man who led police today on a high speed car chase is the same person who killed tom clemens on tuesday night. the chase ended with the suspect crashed into a semi, left his car and opened fire on police, injuring a deputy. we have a reporter in wise county, texas, to night. ed, why do police think this suspect might be related to tom clemens' horrific murder? >> reporter: well, the car that the suspect in this particular case was driving was a black boxy cadillac. what's interesting is this car had two different colorado license plates as well. so obviou
mostly because harry reid called a cloture vote. over, some of the issues take a long time to marinate. that that as people thought it through, i think they realize it's not having a good comprehensive immigration policy is hurting us economically and it's not the right thing to do. it's time to solve it. i admire everyone for coming to the table. but i want to make a point. what rand paul is saying is contrast to gang of eight. his idea is security first, legalization and then citizenship. gang of eight put forward legalization, security and then citizenship. that seems like you could find a compromise, but that is a big leap between security and legalization piece and flipping them. >> andrea: what do you think, eric? >> eric: rand paul opened up a can of whoop-ass on the hill and they were flooded with calls say dog you care to weigh in on rand paul's idea? he threw people for a loop. he came out with an idea at one point he said leads to path of citizenship, which is different from a lot of things they say and has been proposed in past. what he said talk tablet comprehensive immigr
harry reid dismissing the idea of the assault weapons ban or ban of high capacity magazines would get a vote. quote: it's been clear that republicans a vote to the floor. my job is to bring a vote to the store. i can get 60 votes to proceed to that. we cannot have votes on everything unless i get something on the floor. it's a legislative impossible right now for amendment less than 40 votes that's not 60, referring to my amendment. so, i don't have 60, what can i do? oh, by the way if you don't have 60, you know what that means? a lot of democrats bailed on it. no, reed doesn't want the vote, because he doesn't want to embarrass his democratic senators who are just as much sellouts to the n.r.a. as republicans are. the democrats don't want the vote! remember all this excitement at the time when the president was having meetings with people who were for gun control and made the mistake of thinking democrats might actually do something? >> our meeting yet with the vice president was awesome. i mean, it was highly motivational to come out of there with a commitment to a comprehensive lo
second story "out front," can harry reid cave? so today he shelved the assault weapons ban introduced by the democratic colleague senator dianne feinstein. reid's explanation, well, let me play it for you. >> i won't try to put something on the floor that won't succeed. i want something that will succeed. i think the worst of all worlds would be to bring something to the floor and it dies there. >> but did reid really want it "out front," david frum and paul begala. paul, this doesn't sound like the harry reid we all know. this is a guy to say, you know what? 57% of the people in this country favor this assault weapons ban. i'm going to take it to the floor and if republicans want to shoot it down, then you know what? fine. i'll let them take the blame and looking at that and the fact he has a high rating from the nra, one might get a little suspicious. >> first off, he is going to take it to the floor but it's a separate amendment. i will not be part of the larger gun safety bill including things like expanded background checks, mental health, school safety, gun trafficking and ammun
. >>> democratic majority leader harry reid's decision to not let the assault weapons ban go to the floor for the floor angered dianne feinstein, who is not giving up. >> this is very important to me. i'm not going to lay down and play dead. i think the american people have said in every single public poll that they support this kind of legislation. >>> joining me now for more on that, and all the other political news, for our daily fix, chris cillizza, and susan page. hi to both of you. while i'm away, you let the assault weapons ban die, practically, at least harry reid says he's not going to let it go forward. susan, his calculus is that it didn't have the votes and he wanted to have something passed. that's good tactics in terms of the senate, but isn't it surrendering to the nra? >> well, it's a cold calculation. what can get through the senate, the straw purchasing provision my biblt get through the senate. it's possible that university background checks, to gun shows and other venues might get through, but there was no way an assault weapons ban was going to get through this senate
'. that is a decision made by harry reid who says that the assault weapons bill does not have the vote does make it past a fill buster by the republicans. o that is what we reported yesterday. and all of that is still true. senator feinstein's bill is not going to be in the democrat's reform package in the senate. but if you ask senator dianne feinstein, that fact that it's not going to be included in the overall package of bills that goes to the senate floor, that does not mean that her bill is dead. according to her, it may not be a part of that overall comprehensive bill, but she is not going to play dead on this subject, and she insists that it will be voted on by other means. >> now senator reid had said you deserved a vote. but it's appearing that it could be an amend. that it could be a symbolic vote. what's your response to this new -- >> no, if it is an amendment that is not ha symbolic vote. it enacted a law. it went on to the house. it was enacted what senator reid told me is that i would have an opportunity for a vote. i take him at his word. this is very important to me. and i'm not going t
: senator dianne feinsteins not happy with senator harry reid. as you heard her they're insisting she will give up her fight to pass a ban on assault weapons for a second time, despite her dramatic rhetoric today, the senators facts to not quite lineup. kelli, asking americans in late january what approach congress and the president should focus on, well, to prevent further school shootings for example. just 30%, 30 percent responded that they should focus on passing new laws on the sales of guns and ammunition. want to repeat, only 30%. 65 percent said that they should focus of school security measures and the mental health system. by the way, i want to give credit to wayne lapierre of the nra. right now the nra is the only organization or voice that has stood up and said precisely what the solution is, and it is, by the way, in place and author of the public schools in this country. it needs to be in wondered%. senate majority leader harry reid says the assault weapons ban had fewer, as he put it -- this is his language, fewer than 40 votes. fifty-one and need for passage and 60 to
